Normally the small intestine has small numbers of bacteria, less than a thousand per milliliter and it is when it goes higher than that bacteria start to cause all kinds of symptoms including IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). These are typical symptoms: bloating, gas, flatulence, abdominal pain, intensive cramping, heart burn, reflux, constipation or diarrhea. SIBO can come from bacteria from the mouth or colon. When there is an issue with ileocecal valve more likely to be colonic reflux of bacteria into small bowel. Small bowel should have hydrochloric acid, the secretion of bile, pancreatic enzymes, brush border enzymes, and GALT (gat-associated lymphoid tissue). These normal physiological functions prevent overgrowth of bacteria.

Example of some of the diseases associated with SIBO: IBS, Chron’s disease, gall stones, celiac, gluten sensitivity, lactose intolerance, fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis, restless leg syndrome, diabetes, hypothyroidism, scleroderma.

Hydrogen/methane breath testing is the most widely used diagnostic method for this condition. Hydrogen and methane are not produced by human cells but are the metabolic products of fermentation of carbohydrates by intestinal organisms.

Treatment for SIBO includes specific low carbohydrates diet or low FOD-map diet, antibiotics or herbal antibiotics and prevention diet with pokinetics and brush border healing supplements.
